CNA Training and the Increasing Demand for Nursing Assistants
69The health care field is experiencing a strong demand for CNAs. Because of this, CNA training courses are becoming popular.
Under the direction of nurses, certified nursing assistants or CNAs provide patients with routine care. A CNA helps patients with activities of daily living, including eating, walking, exercising, bathing, grooming, and getting dressed.
The CNA keeps track of a patient’s vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate) and reports changes in the patient’s condition to the nurse. With CNAs to accomplish the routine care, the nurses’ attention can be focused on tasks that only they are allowed to do. A CNA can find occupation in nursing homes, long-term health care facilities, hospitals, clinics, and private homes.
Offline and online mediums can serve as venues of CNA training programs, and in some of these programs, both mediums are combined. CNA training programs are available from community colleges, nursing homes, long-term health care facilities, and hospitals. Online CNA training courses can make use of videos, teleconferencing, chat rooms, forums, and other online methods for teaching and interaction with students. For busy students, an advantage to online CNA training is that the schedules may be more flexible.
After students finish their CNA training course, they need to pass the state CNA certification test. This test has a written or oral portion and a skills portion. In the skills portion of the test, the students must perform a set of random clinical tasks with a live model.
Obviously, CNA training courses must strike a balance between theory and skills application, and the student needs a certain amount of clinical experience to be successful in the CNA certification exam. Depending on where you are taking it, the training that leads up to CNA certification takes anywhere from two to twelve weeks.
CNA training courses cover such topics as anatomy, biology, chemistry, nutrition, physiology, infection control, safety, and the basic nursing skills. The course should also polish the communication skills, observational skills, people skills, and physical skills of students so that they can give patients the best of personalized care.
Receiving CNA certification is considered a good path to becoming a licensed nursing practitioner. With CNA certification, you can also advance toward other careers in the medical professions. Here's a nursing assistant sample test to aid you in completing the cna exam!
